Do I need a tunewith an intake?

It's the most-asked question about our products, and the honest answer is: it depends on the product. An airbox that encloses the filter is a different thing from an intake system that changes the plumbing. Here's how to think about it, and what we say for each of ours.

The short version

  • Airbox-type products: no tune is required simply to fit them.
  • Further tuning may add benefit depending on the rest of the car's setup.
  • GR Corolla: the intake can trigger a PCV pressure-difference code; tuning clears it.
  • We won't say 'no tune needed' about a product we haven't proven it on.

Enclosed airboxes: fit and drive

Our airbox products — the i30 N Forge enclosure, the Supra A70 and R34 airboxes — put a box around a filter. They change where the filter breathes from and what it's exposed to; they don't fundamentally alter what the engine's sensors see. For these, a tune isn't required simply to use the airbox. Whether further tuning adds benefit depends on the broader setup of the car — a car that's already tuned for an aftermarket intake is in a different position from a stock one.

Full intake systems: read the product page

A complete intake system changes the airbox, the pipe and sometimes the filter and the cold-air path. Most cars cope fine, but some platforms are sensitive to airflow-meter placement or crankcase-ventilation pressure. That's why we answer per product rather than with a slogan. The current products list what we know on their pages; if a product needs a tune to work properly, it'll say so before you order.

The GR Corolla, specifically

Like most aftermarket intakes for the GR Corolla, our system can trigger an error code relating to the pressure difference through the PCV system. Tuning the car removes the code. A solution for owners who don't intend to tune is in development — if that's you, talk to us before ordering rather than after.

We don't publish airflow, temperature or power figures for any product. There's no test data behind such numbers that would hold across cars, so we describe what the part is made of and how it's designed instead.

When tuning is worth it anyway

If the car has other modifications — exhaust, turbo changes, a different MAF — a tune that accounts for all of them together is where the benefit lives, and the intake is part of that picture. If the car is otherwise stock and the product doesn't require a tune, fit it, enjoy the cleaner bay and the protected filter, and revisit tuning when the rest of the plan catches up.

Questions

Asked before you ask.

Will an airbox throw a check-engine light?
Our airbox-type products aren't designed to, and don't require a tune to fit. The GR Corolla intake system is the one with a known code — see above.
Can you recommend a tuner?
Ask us with your car and location. We'd rather point you to someone who knows the platform than guess.
Does the answer change for future products?
Yes — every product gets its own answer. We won't apply one product's result to another.
